CANDIDATES 2017 SEBASTIANE AWARD

Next September, the NGO Gehitu will present the SEBASTIANE AWARD to the film production which best reflects the reality, freedom and social progress of the LGBTI group. Celebrating its 18th edition this year, the mentioned award will be presented within the San Sebastian Film Festival which will take place between September 22th to 30th. Seven f lms are in competition and five out of competition. On the “Horizontes Latinos” section of this festival, the winning film of the 5th SEBASTIANE LATINO Award “Una mujer fantástica” (Chile-Germany-Spain-USA), by Sebastián Lelio, will also be screened In the inaugural session of this competition.

We want to express our satisfaction for the great number of Latin American participants in the 3rd International LGBTI Film Festivals Conference to be held between September 25th to 27th. Such event, brought together with San Sebastian Film Festival and Spain’s Public Agency for Culture Action (AC/E) whit the Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE), tries to build links between the two continents as well as become a framework for reflection about the reality of this kind of festivals.

Ivana Mladenovic (Romania-Serbia-Belgium)

Adi (40), a young anthropologist recently left by his girlfriend, moves to Ferentari (the poorest neighborhood in Bucharest)  to write a study on manele music (the pop music of the Roma community). While researching his subject, he meets Alberto, a Roma ex-convict who promises to help him. Soon, the two begin a romance in which Adi feeds Alberto improbable plans to escape poverty while Alberto reciprocates with well-concocted phrases of love. When the money runs out, both find themselves trapped in an apartment where they love and use each other, in a game of need and power that has no winners.

Cargo is a story about how desperation can bring a family to the edge of destruction.

Samantha, a woman with an inverted digestive system, Laura, a girl with no eyes, or Ana, a woman with a deformed face. Lonely people who fight to find their place in a society that only understands one kind of physical appearance, which excludes and mistreats those who don’t fit in.

When a natural crisis occurs, the entire population of the Azores is forced to evacuate due to an uncontrolled plague of hydrangeas, a common flower in the islands. Two young soldiers, impassioned by the beauty of the landscape, guide us through the tales of sadness of those forced to leave and the inherent desire to resist and stay on the islands. The filmic wandering becomes a nostalgic and political reflection on territorial belonging and identity, and the roles we assume in the places we come from.

The film Euritan is a review of the narrative Klara eta biok, written by Itxaro Borda in 1985. Pitting the author against the words of her past, it updates her view on the peripheral relationship around the Basque character. Klara eta biok was a LGTBI basque narrative.
